Provisions According to EN 15978, the boundary for repair should include:

  • the production of the repaired part of component and ancillary products;
  • the transportation of the repaired part of component and ancillary products, including production impacts
  • and aspects of any losses of materials during transportation;
  • the repair process of the repaired part of component and ancillary products;
  • waste management of the removed part of the component and of ancillary products;
  • the end of life stage of the removed part of the component and of ancillary products

Water and energy usage related to the repair process should always be included.

However, Repair is considered optional. Please refer to the aspects “Repair with complete LCA”, “Repair with simplified LCA” and “Repair with screening LCA” for further details.

Provisions In the context of simplified LCA, the following items may be neglected upon justification:

  • Production, transportation, waste management, and end of life of ancillary products;
  • Energy and water usage related to the replacement process;
  • Losses of materials during storage, transportation or implementation (if not known).

In the context of screening LCA, only the production of the replaced component may be included.

Please refer to the aspects “Replacement with complete LCA”, “Replacement with simplified LCA” and “Replacement with screening LCA” for further details.

B- 19. “Operational Energy exported and on-site produced and allocation of environmental impacts”

Aspect B- 19. “Operational Energy exported and on-site produced and allocation of environmental impacts”In future, buildings will not only be energy- efficient, but also will produce energy on site in multiple ways.
Description
The energy produced at the building site may not only be consumed in the building, but also exported to the grid. For such cases, calculation and allocation rules need to be defined.

Executive Summary

Operational guidance for Life Cycle Assessment studies of the Energy Efficient Buildings Initiative (EeBGuide) is a European Commission funded project aiming to produce expert guidance for conducting Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies for energy-efficient buildings and building products under the framework of Energy Efficient Building (EeB) Initiative. The EeBGuide guidance document will provide a common methodology supporting reliable assessment and comparison of performance of new energy efficiency measures. It will support LCA practitioners in industry and research.

In order to ensure acceptance of LCA practitioners, EeBGuide is developed with a strong focus on applicability. Therefore, stakeholders and LCA experts were involved from the beginning, describing questions and problems that usually appear while conducting a LCA study.

The critical questions and problems were collected and documented. Due to the high interest from LCA practitioners those questions and problems were further explained and combined with solution approaches. The documentation was rated for relevance by internal and external experts and amended for missing aspects. An additional workshop with European experts and a public consultation with industry partners provided feedback on applicability.

The final EeB Guidance document will be accessible as a web-based interactive document with filter functions to facilitate its handling. It will also provide links to further detailed information sources, training materials or reporting templates.

The project EeBGuide is a Coordination and Support Action (CSA), co-funded by the European Commission under FP7.

What is EeBGuide?

The European research project “EeBGuide” develops methods, rules and operational guidance for the preparation of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies for energy-efficient buildings and building products. Ongoing research under the framework of the Energy Efficient Building European Initiative creates technologies for an energy-efficient Europe. LCA is used to assess the environmental benefits of new technologies. The EeBGuide manuals and guidance will support LCA practitioners to obtain comparative results in their work.
